Egypt confirmed as hosts nation for AFCON 2019

The upcoming African Cup of Nations, AFCON, will be hosted by Egypt, the Confederation of African Football, CAF; announced on Tuesday after a high level meeting.

The race was between Egypt and South Africa, who submitted candidacies late last year after CAF stripped Cameroon of the hosting rights.

Cameroon was stripped of the rights because of their inability to put together infrastructure in time and also due to security threats in parts of the country.

CAF Executive Committee members were initially set to vote in Dakar on Wednesday but opted to do so 24 hours earlier and hours to the 2018 CAF Awards also taking place in the Senegalese capital today, January 8.

South Africa has extensive infrastructure built when they hosted the first World Cup in Africa in 2010. Watchers however expressed reservations about the low South African patronage of other teams.

Egypt also has extensive football facilities, although in recent years attendances at local matches have been restricted because of security concerns in the wake of the Arab Spring revolution and Tahir Square demonstrations.

Morocco had been the favourite to step in after repeatedly promising to do so if needed but then surprisingly said it was not interested once Cameroon was stripped of hosting rights.

It is the first time the tournament will be played mid-year away from the traditional January – February date. It will last between June 15 to July 13, 2019. It will also be the first time there will be 24 participating teams.

Jammeh, Nguema seen dancing at Koffi olomide sing at Equitoria guinea bash

Exiled Gambian president Yahya Jammeh popped up in the Equatorial Guinean capital, Malabo. He was captured in a party mood along with his host, Theodore Obiang Nguema-Mbasogo.

The duo were dancing at a End of Year bash – Presidential Ball by the Equatorial Guinea government – at which famed Congolese musician Koffi Olomide and his band were playing.

The video that showed them dancing along with other top officials was posted on Olomide’s instagram page with the caption: “Les Présidents sur la piste,” which translates to “Presidents on the track.”

The video shows Obiang Nguema jogging his way from his seat to the stage where he joins Olomide in dancing, then comes a smiling Jammeh who joins in the boogie.

Several other top officials and guests joined in dancing and cheering them on. Jammeh is spotted in his usual elaborate all white attire – minus his traditional staff and Islamic beads.

The last public images of Jammeh was in March 2017 when he was spotted on a farm in the president’s hometown of Mongomo, “working for the cameras.”

He ruled The Gambia for over two-decades but lost in December 2016 elections. A failed attempt to cancel the results and regional plan to oust him forced him into exile in Equatorial Guinea.

Despite repeated calls for him to be extradited to face charges of corruption and rights abuse back home, Nguema is on record to have said Malabo will vet any such requests if they are officially made.

Paris and Prince Jackson Honor Late Father Michael Jackson at His 60th Birthday Celebration

The apples don’t fall far from the tree.

On Wednesday, Michael Jackson‘s daughter Paris Jackson, 20, and son Prince Jackson, 21, were together at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas for a special celebration honoring what would have been late singer’s 60th birthday.

Taking the stage at the event, dubbed the “Michael Jackson Diamond Birthday Celebration,” the two followed in their father’s footsteps by accepting the Elizabeth Taylor Legacy Award on his behalf for his humanitarian work with the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

They looked good doing it, too — Paris in a pink strapless dress with ruffled train and Prince wearing a look reminiscent of his late father’s iconic style (black pants, a white T-shirt, and a red bomber jacket).

Both also rocked matching black sneakers, custom designed with the word “Tribute” bedazzled into the sole

The award was presented to Paris and Prince by two very special people: Elizabeth Taylor’s grandson Quinn Tivey and Diana Ross’s son, Evan Ross.

Taylor and Ross were both incredibly close with Michael before his death in June 2009 (Taylor died in March 2011).

“It is extremely a privilege and an honor to be here accepting and award not only for something my dad was so passionate about, but someone he held so very near and dear to his heart, and a foundation that he worked so hard to strive and make the goals that they are achieving right now,” Prince told the crowd.

“The way my father like to lead his life, he liked to lead by example and he never thought that he was too big,” Prince continued. “The King of Pop, the biggest entertainer in the world, he never thought he was too big for any person, no matter what it is that you did or where you came from. I think it’s important to do this to make this world a better place.”

Paris, who is an ambassador of the foundation, let her brother do the talking — telling the crowd that “he’s always the most well-spoken.”

She was more vocal on the red carpet, where she wore colorful silk pants, a short-sleeve white T-shirt, silver heels, and an mix of bold jewelry.

“We celebrate our father and his legacy in our own ways. It’s very exciting to be here,” Paris told E! News. “And it’s a celebration of love, and obviously today is very meaningful to so many people, but I think we honor him every day. It’s not so much the date. It’s more just the feeling of it, but there’s a lot of love here tonight and I’m excited about that.”
